When to contact your doctor urgently

General warning signs that require urgent contact with your dentist after dental procedures.
Important
Below are general warning signs. If your doctor has given you individual instructions, they always take priority.

Contact your doctor urgently if

  • Bleeding does not stop after more than 3–4 hours.
  • Pain increases after 2–3 days instead of decreasing.
  • Body temperature rises above 38 °C and lasts more than 24 hours.
  • Swelling increases after 3 days or grows rapidly.
  • Pus, a strong unpleasant odor, or taste appears.
  • Numbness of the lip, chin, or tongue lasts longer than 24 hours.
  • You have difficulty swallowing, opening your mouth wide, or breathing.
  • A filling, crown, or denture has fallen out, is loose, or interferes with your bite.
  • Liquid or air enters the nose while drinking after surgery in the upper jaw.

What to do before your visit

1. Stay calm

  • Stop any physical activity and rest.
  • Do not apply heat to the surgical area.

2. Contact the clinic

  • Describe your symptoms and when they started.
  • Follow your doctor’s instructions.

3. Come for an examination if advised

  • Bring a list of medications you are taking.
  • Do not remove sutures and do not attempt to adjust dentures or restorations yourself.
If you are unsure, it is better to contact your doctor sooner rather than wait for the condition to worsen.
